2 Chronicles 6:14 (NIV)  "He [Solomon] said, 'O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth--you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.'"

God’s Constant Guidance

            While I worked as a caregiver, often I contemplated that this job was one of the greatest and most important things I have ever done for God.  Being a good wife to my husband Bill, and with his help, raising our two children, Kelly and Keith, ranks up there as important work also.  All these accomplishments were done with God’s help and guidance.

Yet, I felt so much more sacrifice was involved overseeing my parents’ care.  Our children became less and less dependent as time went on.  It was a joy to watch them grow and accomplish things like using the toilet, dressing, and feeding themselves.  We were proud of them when they came home with good grades and joined worthwhile clubs and activities after school.  With my parents the process was in reverse, and each day brought them closer to total dependence on our assistant, Bill and I.

Since I believed God was pleased with me, as I made sure my parents were safe and well, I also trusted him to give me the wisdom and strength I needed each day.  Often I allowed myself to complain and feel blue, but God was always there.  He never failed to remind me that I had power over my thoughts.  I could choose to be peaceful or discontented..  He gave me the wisdom I needed to pick myself up and continue this commitment.

YOUR THOUGHTS:  Do you feel that God is asking you to do something special for him by being a caregiver?  Remember, God doesn’t ask us to do something unless we have the mental, physical, and emotional ability to do it.

TIP FOR CAREGIVER:  Sometimes my mother needed to be left on the toilet for as long as fifteen or twenty minutes.  Since she could easily fall off the seat, our assistant or I would stay with her the whole time.  When it was my turn, I would try to get other things done at the same time such as brushing her teeth, combing her hair, washing her face, and applying moisturizer to her feet and legs to prevent dry skin.

I Know

I watch the graceful monarch

make her rounds among flowers.

Hours ago she was only

a gray lump under a dark bush.

Now she dines on the best nectar.

All praise her beauty.

My soul emerged from its dark place

when I embraced sacrifice.

Now I am called an angel;

this is my greatest moment.
