| The REAL Ernest Hemingway Mojito, and WHY You're Not Getting Them Here in the US |
As I re-enter the world of writing, I thought it only just and thoughtful to kick off at least one webpage with a tribute to a true inspiration, Ernest "Papa" Hemingway. If not for him, most bartenders might not stock fresh mint in their lowboys. We might miss the sound of mint being mashed and muddled with raw sugar. Surely there'd be something wrong if that particular perfume were gone. It may "moonlight" as sweet and tart, yet it's a sublime silent seducer inviting us to linger....if only a moment longer. The MINT is the absolute Cardinal of this Cuban cocktail, the "Mojito". You'll get that in your drink here in the USA. But that's not the secret ingredient from Hemingway's special Cuban watering hole. Read on...PLUS the secret ingredient NOT being used, and there's a wonderful recipe for Cheddar-Nut Wafers! |

“This is a recipe I've had for over 30 years, and I swear I use
it at almost every holiday/special dinner occasion-----It's always
dependable, never goes wrong or "falls" (I think the white sauce is what
holds the integrity of it together)-----and is simply "a crowd
pleaser". It goes well with fish or meat, or by itself with salad. “So,
here it is”: |

| Alzheimer's Early Stages by Daniel Kuhn |
| This is one of the few books that focus on the early stages of AD. Part one pretty much explores how AD begins, its causes and early symptoms. The Part 2 gives practical advice about caring for the loved one with the disease, and Part 3 provides tips for caring for the caregiver. The book is well written, and Mr. Kuhn is extremely knowledgeable about AD in seemingly every stage, and in this book the early stages in particular. |

| The Pulse Test: Revised Edition by Arthur F. Coca |
| This 186-page book thoroughly describes quite an easy "self-test" to determine your sensitivity to foods that can/could produce allergic reactions…that surprising range from asthma to seizures…some even produce migraine headaches, ulcers, and backaches. It looked interesting, and I was able to purchase it at half of the list price of $12.00…which brings along a little tip. They may be a bit shopworn or used (So perhaps inappropriate gifts); however, places like "Half-Price Books" and flea markets are a wealth of sources for health-related informational and Caregiving books for you. |

| This Is For the Caregivers Only... |
Organization development consultant & health laughter consultant Marilyn Sprague-Smith suggests caregivers or anyone who wants more joy in their lives incorporate the following 6 practices:
MONDAY is for compliments. Look for ways you can give sincere compliments to others.
TUESDAY is for flexibility. Try something new.
WEDNESDAY is for gratitude. Think of the many things that you're grateful for.
THURSDAY is for kindness. Be as nice to others as you can. Every day should be THURSDAY for everyone!
FRIDAY is for forgiveness...of yourself and others. and.since "EVERYONE DESERVES A TREAT", especially exhausted caregivers!............SATURDAY is for chocolate. It can be a new CD, a DVD, a pizza delivered with all the trimmings, or it can really be chocolate (DARK CHOCOLATE is actually very good for you)!! The point being a well-earned treat for the caregiver too. Unfortunately, my "chocolate" would've been to enjoy some real sleep longer than a brief nap. Caregiving by yourself rarely allows for that.
But before multiple years of caregiving and since after, I've taken business-related trips to downtown Manhattan, New York, and just a mile north of Times Square on 7th Avenue between 54th and 55th is the "Carnegie Deli". Dining there is a supreme treat. I can't recreate standing in line (V.I.P.s have to do it too) or its frantic, zany pace; however, I CAN provide you with the easy "Pistol-Combo-Whiskey-Down-With-a-Shot" recipe! Click on the blue line above and I'll tell you more about possibly creating the most incredible sandwich in the USA which may be "YOUR SATURDAY IS FOR CHOCOLATE"! Actually, I have ONE more incredibly decadent sandwich for Star TV Chef/Author/Restauranteur Ms. Paula Deen, where my choice to endorse her is causing me grief from both my collegues and my University alumni. |
